Individual Counselling

What to expect:

Confidentiality: Confidentiality is a top priority for Ashley. What's shared in session stays between you and your counsellor, unless there's immediate danger, harm to a child, or a court subpoena.

Therapeutic Alliance: Building a strong therapeutic alliance is crucial in therapy. Ashley, as a person-centered therapist, creates a judgment-free space for you to share your distress. You can share at your own pace, and together, you'll create a personalized treatment plan that suits your needs.

Self-Exploration and Growth: Individual counselling allows you to explore your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. It helps you navigate challenging memories, grow personally, become self-aware, understand others better, set goals, and make positive changes in your life.

Couples Counselling

What to expect:

Self-Discovery: Get to know yourself better in these sessions, while also understanding more about your relationship. Couples counselling can help you discover your own needs and determine if they can be met within your relationship or within yourself.

Articulating Feelings: Expressing your emotions can be challenging. In relationships, things are sometimes said unintentionally due to frustration, sadness, or fear of rejection. In counselling, couples will learn to effectively communicate their feelings and engage in positive and more meaningful discussions.

Improved Active Listening Skills: Another way to improve connection and communication is by practicing active listening. In session, Ashley will play as a mediator to help the couple try to stay engaged, be non-judgmental, ask for clarification, and summarize points during discussions. Active listening reduces conflicts and promotes self-reflection and understanding.

Counsellor Support: Discussing certain topics can be uncomfortable, but having a couples counsellor to help assist can make this process more manageable. They will help keep the conversation on a track of productive topics, while helping with and encouraging effective communication. Please keep in mind that the counsellor doesn't advise on whether to continue the relationship and although it is hard work that involves a lot of vulnerability and energy, both parties need to put effort into repairing a fractured relationship.

In-person, over the phone, or online sessions available.

Reaching out for support can be a daunting first step. And that is exactly what it is, a huge first step so congratulate yourself for getting this far! Keeping this in mind, Ashley wants to create a space that encourages you to bring your most authentic self. She offers a variety of options including in-person in South Surrey, over the phone, or online via her Jane booking system.

Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP)

Come As You Are Counselling counsellors are registered with CVAP, and are qualified to offer counselling services to claimants who meet the eligibility criteria for sessions funded by CVAP.

If you have been impacted by a criminal offense, you have the option to seek support through the BC Crime Victim Assistance Program. This program offers aid to eligible individuals, encompassing essential services such as counselling. Approved claimants may receive partial coverage for counselling sessions through CVAP.

The Crime Victim Assistance Program (CVAP) serves to aid victims, their immediate family members, and certain witnesses in managing the repercussions of violent crimes. This program extends financial benefits to alleviate incurred losses and facilitate the process of recovery.

A person qualifies as a victim if they have been directly or indirectly impacted by a crime. Reporting the incident to the police or experiencing physical harm is not a prerequisite for victim status.

Additionally, the term "victim" may encompass:

  • Individuals whose family members or loved ones were harmed or killed during the commission of a criminal act.

  • Those who have witnessed a crime.

It is crucial to understand that blame does not rest with victims for the events they have experienced, nor are they accountable for the actions of those who perpetrated crimes against them.

Applying for Benefits

To initiate the benefits application process, forms can be obtained from victim service programs or through the Crime Victim Assistance Program.

Typically, applications must be submitted within one year from the date of the crime. It's important to note that applicants need not wait for charges to be laid or for the offender to be convicted before applying for benefits.

Exceptions to the one-year timeframe are granted in the following circumstances:

  • If the applicant is under the age of 19, they have until they reach 20 years old to submit their application. Minors have the option to apply independently or have a parent or guardian apply on their behalf.

  • For sexual offenses occurring after July 1, 1972, victims (including minors) may apply at any time. However, immediate family members must apply within one year from the date of the crime or upon becoming aware of it.

  • Extensions may be granted by the program when applicants, due to various reasons, could not reasonably be expected to complete their application within the one-year timeframe.
